Anyone who has ever optimized their WordPress site has heard of WP Rocket (link), a popular website speedup plugin. In this post, we are debunking the myths about this plugin, which it undeservedly overgrown with.
WP Rocket significantly different from other optimization plugins, including from the free SpeedPlus Optimini plugin:
- It cannot be downloaded from the WP repository – the plugin exists only in the paid version.
- Its developers are running an aggressive advertising campaign. It is logical, given the point above.
- The plugin is the most comprehensive of them all. In other words, it is marketed as an all-in-one, the only optimization plugin needed.
Considering the $49 price, not everyone can afford to purchase this plugin just to give it a try. Usually WP Rocket is installed by those who intend to speed up the site on their own.
As for the work of the plugin itself, let’s say briefly: it does its job. If you haven’t previously accelerated your site, you will be impressed with the results. You just need to install it and click all the checkboxes in the admin panel. But…
WP Rocket: not always and not for everyone
When optimizing client sites or simply communicating with potential customers, we often hear from them: “I installed WP Rocket, but the indicators are still in the red zone”, “I can’t activate the *** function, because the layout of the site breaks after that.”
First of all, you need to understand that no optimization plugin works out of the box. The reason is simple: all sites are different, and sometimes very different. Undoubtedly, on some simple sites, the this plugin does not need fine tuning. But what should the rest of us do?
By the way, one of the reasons for the incorrect operation of the WP Rocket is the use of a hacked (nulled) version. Please note that by installing something nulled, you are installing a low-quality product with embedded insecure code. This unsafe code is successfully used for their own purposes by various hackers. However, this is a topic for a separate article.
Above, we mentioned fine-tuning. So, the WP Rocket has basically general settings – all for the sake of simplicity and user convenience. But when the need arises to modify this plugin, there are public updates and “cheats” from the developer. Changes are made to functions.php, CSS, Html, or additional mini-plugins from the same developer are installed.
The other day, we were provided with a site with an activated WP Rocket for optimization. The indicators were quite low (see photo below), we even thought that the plugin was not working.
However, when it was deactivated, the site’s PageSpeed dropped to almost zero. That is, this plugin, even without fine tuning, decently accelerated a difficult site. Why not easy: installed under 50 plugins, including several antiviruses and APIs.
In that project, we decided to try to win the competition against WP Rocket. Most of the PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix recommendations were done manually. Installed five other plugins for continuous optimization. You can see the result of two days of work in the image above.
